Coolant

COOLANTS / ANTI-FREEZE

Many of us in the UK know this additive simply as Anti-Freeze and therefore only make sure they have enough in Winter or coming up to Winter.

In reality however, today’s modern coolants are vital to the longevity of the engine because it is also a major anti-corrosive and on the modern engine which have many aluminium parts fitted, without the new stlye coolants, your engine will begin to corrode from the inside out, parts will be difficult to remove, often resulting in broken bolts or snapped studs and in severe cases other parts can become impossible to remove without major damage such as glow plugs and injectors.

The correct coolant in your engine is of critical importance and at the moment in 2019, there are currently six different coolants in the cars on todays roads and five of them are relevant and one of them is the older coolant from many years ago which was designed to be used in cast iron blocks.

Don’t take the chance and buy cheap coolant from the supermarkets, check and make sure the correct one is inside your engine.

ANTI-FREEZE

For those of us who have owned motor vehicles or had our Driving licence for more than 20 years will remember us going into shops and asking for Anti-Freeze when Winter was approaching.

There was also the usual mad rush when Winter suddenly appeared and panic buying, quite often when it was too late and the damage had already been done and the engine was frozen, thus cracking the block and ruining the engine when starting was attempted. A lot has changed since those days as well as the Winter’s are usually milder too.

With the advent of aluminium into engines making them more lightweight, more easily and cheaply mass produced and with the clever design of some engines, the design to break others pieces before breaking the engine in the event of a failure, anti-freeze is no more……… instead, what we have now are coolants and these need to stay in the vehicle all year round – 365 days per year. If the correct coolant is kept in the engine all year round then you shouldn’t get any significant corrosion on the engine but time after time we see this when we look under the bonnet and this is because some people are assuming just putting water to keep the engine cool will work just as well.

While it does keep the engine cool, it is not as effective but mainly, it is not protecting the engine, if you just put water then you are beginning the destructive cycle of death for the engine by almost adding corrosion to the engine as the water pump in doing it’s job will distribute that clean tap water all round the engine and then the only way to restore things back to 95% will be to completely flush out the cooling system with a dedicated non-corrosive cooling system flush and then adding a higher concentration of coolant to circulate and try to restore most of the damage which has begin. TAKE NOTE – after filling up the system with normal water only and then running the car for a while, you will never get the car back to 100% rust free again, so don;t take chances, always use the correct coolant and make sure you keep at least 1 or 2 litres somewhere in your car or at home.
